Being in a car accident is scary and unfortunately they happen everyday. Not only do you have to worry about yourself and the other people around you, but now you also have to figure out how you are going to file an Auto Insurance Claim and what information you need to do that.

To make it easier on you we have compiled this list of information you should obtain before filing a claim, as well as some tips on what to do and not to do after a car accident.

Let’s start with the basics:

Of course, immediately after the accident make sure everyone is okay. Call 911 for medical help if needed. You should also get in contact with law enforcement, as in some states you must get in contact with law enforcement after a car accident and you can obtain an accident report this way. Just make sure you get the name and badge number of the officer helping you. Stay as calm as you can.

After everyone is okay and help is called, start talking to the other drivers to gain the information you need to file your auto insurance claim. We highly suggest to never make a deal with the other drivers to accept cash for the accident instead of filing a claim. Even if they offer a large amount of cash or say they have no auto insurance, accepting a cash deal from them could cost you down the road.

What information should you get from the other drivers?

1. Name and contact information
2. Insurance company and policy number
3. Drivers license and license plate number
4. Type, color and model of car
5. Location of the accident
6. Pictures or videos of the damage of both cars
7. Try to talk to witnesses if any are available and write down what they say happened, as well as get their contact information
8. Write down everything you remember and include weather conditions, injuries, and any other information

After you obtain all that information, it is time to start your auto insurance claim. Make sure you get in contact with your insurance company as soon as possible. The quicker you get in contact with them, the quicker they can help you through the process. This may include filling out forms and sending over pictures and videos of the accident. Your insurance company will know how to assist you through this and what may be included in your policy.
